Promotion

2 min readUpdated April 2026

Promotion encompasses all activities used to market and create awareness for an artist or release, including playlist pitching, social media, PR, advertising, and direct fan outreach.

Promotion involves marketing activities designed to increase awareness and sales of music products.

Promotion is the marketing engine of the music business: everything that happens after a track is recorded to ensure it’s discovered, streamed, and supported by fans. In a crowded digital landscape, even great music rarely finds its audience without deliberate, sustained promotion.

Promotion spans multiple channels, each reaching different segments of listeners:

  • Social media promotion uses organic posts and paid ads on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and X to build a direct audience and keep fans engaged.
  • Playlist promotion focuses on pitching songs to editorial curators at DSPs (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.) and to independent playlist owners with strong followings in specific genres.
  • PR (public relations) targets music blogs, magazines, and journalists to secure reviews, interviews, and feature stories.
  • Radio promotion works with program directors at commercial and college radio to gain airplay.
  • Live performance and sync licensing (placements in film, TV, games, ads) extend an artist’s reach into new contexts and often have long-term impact.

Effective promotion is multi-channel and ongoing, not a one-day push. It typically unfolds in three phases:

  • Pre-release: teasers, pre-save campaigns, announcement posts, and early outreach to build anticipation.
  • Release week: concentrated activity to drive maximum first-week streams and visibility.
  • Post-release: continued content, press, and targeted ads to extend the life of the release.

Budgets can range from zero (DIY social content and grassroots outreach) to substantial spends on PR agencies, radio pluggers, and paid media. Many independent artists now manage much of this themselves, using tools to coordinate efforts, measure performance, and focus limited resources on the highest-impact channels.

melabel’s Campaigns feature centralizes this process: it connects campaign tasks, timelines, and deliverables directly to the release calendar and analytics, so artists and teams can plan, execute, and optimize promotion for each release in one place.
