Content Decay

2 min read

Content Decay shows how quickly a post's engagement accumulates and then fades after publishing, revealing how long your content stays useful on each platform.

Content Decay describes how quickly a post stops earning attention after it goes live. It is usually shown as a curve or a set of time buckets, each showing what percentage of the post's total engagement had arrived by that point. You might see, for instance, that your posts reach most of their total engagement within the first 24 hours. The same idea is sometimes called content lifespan or engagement half-life.

Decay varies a lot by platform and format. Feed-driven platforms tend to burn bright and fade fast, because new content constantly pushes older posts out of view. Search-driven platforms such as YouTube can keep a video earning views for months or years. Knowing your own decay curve tells you how often you need to post to stay visible, and when a post has run its course and is worth reposting, resharing or boosting.

For example, if an artist's TikTok clips get almost all their engagement in the first 48 hours while their YouTube tutorials keep growing for weeks, release week should lean on a steady rhythm of short clips, while the long-form video does the slow, lasting discovery work.

melabel's Social Analytics shows Content Decay for your connected accounts, which feeds directly into how you pace posts on your Content Calendar around each release.
