Shares

2 min read

Shares count how many times people passed your post along, by reposting it, sending it in a message, or sharing it to their own story or feed.

Shares measure how often people pass your content on to someone else. Depending on the platform, a share can be a repost to a public feed, a share to a story, or a send inside a private message. Each one puts your music in front of a person who chose to recommend it, which is the closest digital equivalent to word of mouth.

Shares matter because they are how content escapes your existing audience. Likes and comments mostly reach people who already follow you. Shares carry your post into new networks, often with a personal endorsement attached. A large share of modern sharing happens privately in direct messages, so you usually see the count but not who it went to.

For example, a short clip of a crowd singing the chorus back at a small show might get modest likes but hundreds of shares, as fans send it to friends who were there or who should hear the song. That is a strong sign the moment is spreading, and a good cue to put a Smart Link in front of the people arriving from it.

melabel's Social Analytics reports shares for supported platforms and uses them to calculate Amplification Rate, so you can see which posts travel beyond your followers and plan more content in that direction.
