Vanity Metrics

2 min read

Vanity Metrics are impressive-looking numbers, like raw likes or follower counts, that do not reliably indicate real growth in fans, streams or revenue.

Vanity Metrics are numbers that look good on a screen but do not reliably tell you whether your music career is growing. Raw like counts, total follower numbers and video views without any context are the usual examples. They are easy to celebrate and easy to share, but they rarely answer the question that matters: is this turning into fans who listen, buy and come back?

Vanity metrics are not worthless. A spike in views can signal that something is working. The problem is reading them alone. Followers can be passive or bought, likes can be reflexive, and views can come from people who scrolled away in a second. Actionable metrics connect more directly to outcomes: saves, shares, link clicks, pre-saves, streams, and conversion rates. The fix is context, which means ratios, trends over time, and links between social activity and real results.

For example, an artist celebrates a post with 100,000 views, but only 40 people clicked through to listen. A quieter post with 8,000 views drove 500 clicks and a visible bump in streams the next day. The second post did far more for the career.

melabel was built around this idea. By putting Social Analytics next to Music Analytics and Smart Links, it helps artists move past vanity metrics and see which activity actually leads to listeners.
