Video Views

2 min read

Video Views count how many times a video was played, but each platform defines a view differently, so view counts are not directly comparable across networks.

Video Views measure how many times a video was played. It sounds simple, but every platform defines a view in its own way. Short-form platforms such as TikTok generally count a view as soon as a video starts playing, and replays by the same person can add to the total. YouTube applies its own validation before a view is counted. Instagram has moved toward views as a headline metric across its formats.

Because the definitions differ, 50,000 views on one platform and 50,000 on another do not represent the same level of attention. The fair comparison is within a single platform, or by using quality signals like average watch time and completion rate where the platform provides them. A video that is watched to the end, or looped, is doing far more work than one that is scrolled past after a second.

For example, a 15 second hook clip on TikTok might rack up 200,000 views while the full music video on YouTube shows 15,000. That does not mean TikTok is ten times more valuable. It means the two videos play different roles: discovery for the clip, deeper listening for the full video.

melabel's Social Analytics shows Video Views per platform with clear labels, so you can compare fairly and read views alongside saves, shares and clicks through to your music.
